In case you missed it: The A in ABCs of employment is for Attention

In the ABCs of employment “B” is for “Be yourself’’.

On being ourselves, I think dr Seuss said it best:

  • that is truer than true.
  • There is no one alive
  • who is Youer than You

Only you can be the best version of yourself. You cannot be someone else and nobody else can be you. By whole-heartedly being yourself, you will not only be happier and more effective, but also have a greater influence wherever you go and with whatever you do. Being authentic helps us to get along with ourselves better. It hlps us to be at ease in life and at work. It will also help us to be more confident and energised and give others reason to respect and trust us. It will help us to add value sustainably.

To me, getting to know myself better, therefor, is very important. I want to know how my brain works, what the best diet and activities are for my development and growth, and to understand why I do what I do. I want to reflect on my behaviour, values, relationships, and the impact I have on others and the environment.

I want to be the best me I can be.

To Brené Brown authenticity is

You can be the best version of yourself. And you should be.

Your uniqueness – your being – is what makes the difference between you and the next candidate for employment. Your uniqueness should be portrayed in your CV, because if there are ten CV’s on the table, all with the same qualifications and experience, it is that uniqueness that will make the difference. Don’t fit in, stand out. Companies are in dire need of unique individuals, filled with creativity.
